5 Basic Rules of Internet Marketing

Date: 11/12/2006
:
According to Nach M. Maravilla (2006), President and CEO of PowerHomeBiz.com LLC,  there are 5 basic rules of Internet Marketing. Listed below are 5 basic rules of Internet marketing:

    1. Understand that everything starts with content: Content is the best weapon on the web and having effective content on your site is really a powerful Internet marketing tool.

    2. Be Persistent: "Internet marketing is something that is done on a regular basis using a variety of techniques". Is not a one shot deal.

    3. Use different techniques: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". For example, consider both paid advertising and guerrilla marketing strategies such as:

    1. Pay per click advertising
    2. Banner advertising
    3. Pop-ups, pop-unders, and interstitials
    4. Text link advertising
    5. Contextual text advertising
    6. Lead generation service
    7. Running an affiliate program
    8. Organic search engine optimization
    9. Online press releases (both online and print media)
    10. Article marketing
    11. Participation in forums and communities (without spamming)
    12. Email marketing
    13. Tapping blogs
    14. Link popularity

    4. Track and measure your results: Monitor your internet marketing activities regularly so you know which ones are working and which ones don't.

    5. Learn, learn, and learn: Internet marketing is a continually growing and evolving business. You must stay current on the latest techniques that people are using in marketing online by visiting online experts found in blog and other online media. One great resource is WebmasterWorld.com where you can learn about the latest updates of Google to new ways you can monetize your website, says Nach.

How to Add a Copyright Symbol to Your Office Live Public Site.

Date: 11/12/2006
:

Tutorials Live Copyright notice

Adding a copyright notice on the footer of your web page is something most web designers include to make sites look professional.

Although, some web editing programs give you the ability to insert symbols or characters into your web page, the Office Live Web Designer currently does not offer this feature.

However, you use Word to easily accomplish this by pressing and holding down the CTRL key  and then hit ALT + C on your keyboard. Or if you're using Word 2007, click the Insert command tab, next select Symbol, then choose the © copyright symbol. Highlight the copyright symbol then copy and paste into the footer of your web page.

How to Add Popup Windows to your Office Live Public Site

Date: 11/13/2006
:
Popups when mouse clicked open a new browser window to display content on a website. They are often used as a form of online advertising on the Internet to increase web traffic, quickly capture email addresses for your company newsletter, show additional information about a product or display a table of contents.

To create a popup window using  the new Office Live Web Designer, you will either need a bit of JavaScript knowledge or use a FREE Popup window Generator  like Accessible Pop-up Windows to get the job done.

Using this site makes it really simple to create JavaScript and HTML code for popups.
  1. Decide on the type of popup you want on your site.
    • Standard popups are windows with toolbars, menus, scrollbars enabled as well as the ability to set the window size.
    • Consoles popups are windows without a toolbars, scrollbars and menus and allow you to set the window size.
    • Full screen mode are full screen browser windows that take up the entire screen. For example, press the F11 key on your keyboard to switch your browser to Full Screen. This is full screen.

  2. Type in the text for the link.

  3. Enter the URL to your webpage or document.

  4. Set the width and height in pixels. (e.g. computer monitors are usually set at 800 x 600 pixels or 1024 x 768 pixels by default). Depending on the content you might want to select 200x 200 or 400x400.

  5. Click Generate the code button.

  6. In the first text box, where it says Place this in the <head> of your document, press Ctrl +A on your keyboard or highlight the entire code and copy and paste into Notepad (on most PCs, Notepad is located under Start>All Programs>Accessories> Notepad)

  7. Click File, Save As, and name the file popup.js and save  it to your desktop.

  8. Upload the file to your Document Gallery in Office Live.

  9. Now open or create a new page within your site and add a HTML module.

  10. On the first line of the HTML module, enter the following script: <script name-"JavaScript" src="/Documents/popup.js"></script>

  11. Go back to the Accessible Popup Window Generator Page and copy the contents of the second textbox, where it says, Place this in the <body> of your page where you link to the popup window.

  12. Go back to your HTML Module window, and paste the link code after the script code.  The end result should look something like this in the HTML module: <script name-"JavaScript" src="/Documents/popup.js"></script><a href="http://tutorialslive.org/feedback.aspx" target="popUpWin" onclick="popUpWin(this.href,'fullScreen',400,400);return false;">Tutorials Live Web Survey</a>

  13. Click Ok to add the code to your page.

You can also modify the link code if you prefer to add a button versus a text link.  This is easy to accomplish using the HTML module.  For instance, to accomplish this highlight the text (e.g. Tutorials Live Web Survey) then click Images. Select or upload your button within your image gallery and  click Ok. Then add border="0" right before the /> and after the <img src="/images/yourbutton.gif" code to keep the blue border link from showing around your button.  Click Ok.

Keep in mind that some browsers are enabled to block popups so you might want to consider adding a notice to your users to allow popups from your site via their browsers.

How to create and hyperlink to anchors

Date: 11/18/2006
:

An anchor is a marker within a webpage where you define a specific location in the document with an anchor name and then you can hyperlink directly to that anchor.

Anchors are most valuable in long documents with multiple sections. They are good design techniques to use because they give users the ability to jump to any section of your webpage.  To create an anchor and link to it, you must first mark the anchor location and then you create a hyperlink that refers to it.

To accomplish this via Office Live:

  1. Open the Office Live Site Designer and the page where these bookmark links will reside.
  2. Place your cursor next to the area where you want to link too.
  3. Click Module, then HTML
  4. Enter the code for the anchor link (e.g. <a name="anchor1"></a> )
  5. Click Ok
  6. Now, create a hyperlink to the anchor by typing some text and highlight it using your mouse.
  7. Click the hyperlink tool bar in the OL Web Designer tool
  8. And enter the following: yourdomainname.com/yourpage.aspx#anchor1
  9. Click Ok

How to HTML Code to my Office Live Public Site

Date: 11/8/2006
:

Using the HTML module in the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer, you can place HTML code snippets on the pages of your public web site. You can use this feature to enhance your site by creating special effects, adding video, flash, and  to shopping cart code. For example, many merchant services provide HTML snippets that you can copy and paste into your Web site. The snippet contains a button that, when clicked, takes your customers to the payment service to pay for the items or services they are buying from you.

To add HTML code to a public Web Site
  1. On the left navigation bar, click WebSite, and then click Page Editor.
  2. Click Module, and then click HTML.
  3. In the text box, do one of the following:
    • Type or paste the HTML code that you want to add.
    • Click Hyperlink to add a link to a Web address, another page on the Web site, an e-mail address, a document in the Web site's gallery, or another link, such as HTTPS or FTP.
    • Click Images to browse for an image to insert.
  4. When your code snippet looks good, click OK to add it to your site.
  5. (Optional) Drag the snippet to place it in a different zone.
  6. Save the site by clicking Save. To view the resulting page, click View.
  7. (Optional) To change the code, right-click the module, and then click Properties.

Using Style Sheets to format Text

Date: 11/30/2006
:

Virtually anything you can do in a word processor program can be done in HTML by using styles. However, specifying a certain font to appear on a web page can be tricky if everyone doesn't have the same fonts installed on their computers.

A work around to this issue is to specify a font family rather than an individual font. Basically, a font family is a set of fonts listed in order of preference. So, if the computer displaying your page does not have the first font in the list, then it checks the second, then the third, and so on until it finds a match (Wempen, 2006).

In Office Live, you can insert a HTML module and formatted text using styles to make certain text stand out. For example, you might want to set an individual paragraph to the Fantasy font family. To accomplish this:

  1. Click Module, then HTML.
  2. In the HTML module dialog box, enter the following: <p style="font-family:Western,fantasy">Type paragraph here</p>
  3. Click Ok.

As you can see by using styles you have access to range of fonts not listed in the Office Live Web Designer.

Windows Live Mail Desktop

Date: 12/18/2006
:

If you're like me you have more than one Windows Live account (Hotmail, MSN, Office Live) and want a way to be able to send/receive mail in one program, one locations. You may have Microsoft Outlook so you can easily accomplish this by downloading and installing the Outlook Connector tool however it only works with Office Live accounts so I'm still having to check my Hotmail email online. Not to mention that the Outlook Connector tool doesn't work that great in my opinion. I'm constanly being asked to reauthenticate or verify my account via the web. Welcome to Windows Live Mail for your desktop. This is a very easy to use and mail program that allows you to add multiple POP3 and http (hotmail, MSN, Office Live, etc) email accounts in one place. I just setup all my Office Live business email accounts as well as my Hotmail. I highly recommend you check it out.
